Scents: the different olfactory families

Like all art, perfume has its own language. It has a vast semantic field, sometimes borrowed from other worlds.

Divided, subdivided, olfactory families sometimes overlap, and are juxtaposed to qualify new, hitherto unclassifiable compositions.

There are 7 of them: let's take a look:

  • The hesperidia family:

Designating the citrus family, such as bergamot, lemon, grapefruit or mandarin, it is the oldest family in modern perfumery.

  • The floral family :

This family includes everything nature has to offer in terms of fragrant flowers. The fragrances in this family are used to create a large proportion of women's perfumes.

  • Likewise, the fern family :

The latter corresponds to lavender notes, for example. Typical scents for men's fragrances.

  • The chypre family:

It's easily recognizable, as this family allows you to create fragrances with character. Components are generally based on notes of oak, patchouli or bergamot. In fact, chyprés are highly identifiable.

  • Next, the woodland family :

Build around the main wood notes: sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and patchouli. These scents are generally found in the base notes.

  • The leathery family:

It's the combination of several essences such as frankincense, styrax, etc., which usually gives this pungent, powerful note. A combination that usually gives this pungent, powerful note.

  • Finally, the oriental amber family:

These are the soft, vanilla fragrances that are popular for feminine scents.

The olfactory pyramid of your scents

It's hard to see the olfactory families not to mention the olfactory pyramid. This is where scents are felt:

First, we have the top notewhich is the lightest and most fleeting. This is the note we smell after vaporizing our fragrance. It's generally a fresh, volatile note that fades quickly.

Next is the heart note The fragrance that gives it its character and style. It often includes white flowers and rosy notes. This is the so-called floral family. However, this can change from one fragrance to another. This note only becomes fully apparent after 20 to 30 minutes.

Finally, the background note : it closes the fragrance and is intense and long-lasting. It is the very essence of the olfactory signature. It's the one that stays on our skin the longest. In fact, it can last up to 24 hours.
